The branded Weather Authority animations were developed between 2017-2020. The overall messaging and branding stayed consistent across an app system update and on-air news graphics package updates. The messaging methods for the weather animations cover many styles and processes, from kinetic typography to app explainers and walkthroughs. A majority of the animations were timed out to a voice over track for playback. While others, mostly The Weather Authority app explainers were timed for on-air talent reads in the newscast scripts. The weather animations also featured local tower camera weather footage and local clips to reinforce the station branding and sense of local accuracy. Experiments with typography, transitions and video and graphic elements are seen throughout the animations. These animations were built for both in the newscast and for bumping out to commercial breaks.
These animations span two rebranding initiatives-a news graphic rebranding and an app rebranding. The branded look progressed from the blue angled graphics to the white base background with blue accents. After this branding update, the Weather Authority app also went through an in-app update. The app menus, radar map options and overall layout of information were updated with the new build of the current app. And then the final update within the app, was combining the StormPins app into the Weather Authority app.
These animations were built using local footage, stock footage, established branding elements, After Affects, Illustrator and Photoshop.
